How To Access Blocked Sites Via Proxy

Your boss at work might have restricted you from visiting certain sites like facebook, youtube, twitter and so on just thinking they are distractions. It might even be your school has a very fast WLAN but the network administrator makes it impossible to watch music videos on youtube or hang out with your peeps on facebook. Crazy, huh? Are you even aware some governments restrict their citizens from visiting certain sites? ( I've heard about China, Saudi Arabia and there's word around that you can't access some sites in Malaysia too). There are even some websites that block visitors from certain countries from accessing their contents but whatever the case may be, there's a way out and after reading this post, you'll definitely have access to all those blocked websites. I'm not sure there's a site that can block me from accessing them even if they don't allow visitors from Nigeria, and I'm not sure I'll be bothered if my network operator blacklists some sites cuz I'll still forge a way through anyway.

There are different ways to bypass censorship but they all do the same thing: your computer sends data to the proxy server, the proxy server sends your request to the site you want to visit, the site sends the reply which the proxy server gets and displays to you. You get to visit the site and it's gonna look like you're just visiting that proxy server, that's the basic principle.

1. Using Anonymous Proxies

This is the easiest way to bypass any form of censorship and access blocked sites. You only need to get a working anonymous proxy with it's port and input it into your browser. Getting a working anonymous proxy is the first thing and you can get lots of them from hidemyass.com. They've been around for some time now and their proxy list is always updated so you won't be left with just a bunch of dead proxy servers. You should select anyone that supports HTTPS so you will be able to access secure sites (https://). Just key in the IP and port into your browser and you're good to go.

Changing Proxy Settings For Firefox

-Go to Tools, then Options.
-Click on Advanced tab.
-Select "Network" tab.
-Click "Settings" button in the "Connections" area.
-Select the Manual Proxy Configuration radio button.
-In the necessary proxy field(s), set HTTP Proxy (proxy IP) and proxy configuration Port.
-Check use this proxy server for all protocols.
-Click OK.

Changing Proxy Settings For Google Chrome

-Click on the spanner toolbar icon
-Select Options
-Click on Under The Hood tab
-Click on Change Proxy Settings button
-If you are using LAN, click "LAN Settings" button. If you are using Dial-up or Virtual Private Network connection, select necessary connection and click "Settings" button.
-Make sure the "automatically detect proxy settings" and "use a proxy automatic configuration script" options are not checked.
-In the "Proxy Server" area, click the check box next to Use a proxy server for this connection.
-If necessary, enable "bypass proxy server for local addresses".
-Click the "Advanced" button and set Proxy Server address (proxy IP), proxy server port.
-Click OK.

For Internet Explorer, Netscape, Opera and other browsers, there's a post I made sometimes in 2009 on how to change their proxy settings and I suggest you check it out.

2. Using Proxy Sites/Proxy Servers (PHP, CGI, GLYPE)

This is another way to access blocked sites and it even looks easier than the one above. You don't need to tamper with your broser proxy settings or download any software, you just need to find a proxy site or build your own. Yes, you heard me right! You can either build your own PHP proxy server or create your personal CGI proxy server. In case you think that's some geekie stuff that's gonna be too hard, you can take the easy way out and find proxy sites to use. I have a page on this site with some CGI proxy servers you can use. You to can run a google search for free php proxy server or visit phpproxies.com or phpMyProxy for fast access to those blocked sites.

How to use them? Simple! Just enter your destination address in the url box and you're there!

3. Using Anonymity Softwares

Anonymizers or anonymity software are programd that basically make you anonymous or in other words, change your IP address. This softwares are numerous but a great deal of them are for sale. There are some that are free though and I made some posts on them in the past. You can check the archive or view all my posts tagged ANONIMIZERS to see what I'm talking about.

There's a host of them but the most crazy of them all is Tor. Tor changes your IP address almost every two minutes or so but If you need one with a stable IP address, I recommend Your Freedom, Gpass, Ultrasurf and Freegate.

Your Freedom

I prefer to call this software a flexible anonymizer and anti-censorship tool. It easily bypasses firewall as long as you get the configuration right. It is described by the publisher as 'internet most sophisticated proxy tunneling solution'. Your Freedom come with a user guide and I implore you to go through it carefully before you use the software. Before you can use this software, you need to create a free account with the publisher. The username and your chosen password gives you access to all your freedom's 32 servers. Your freedom allows you to connect to its server in different connection modes and these include http, https, udp, cgi and ftp. It's configuration is so flexible and it's been so hard for my network to totally block firewall bypass software over the years. What makes it even harder to block is that there are presently thirty two freedom servers to choose from and more are being added.

Configuration

As complex as the configuration might seem to a first time user, I still maintain that it's easy and self explanatory but I'll still give a hint on the basic settings.

1. Click on configure. In the space for address, input any freedom server eg. ems05.your-freedom.de
You can select any connection mode that suites you but I prefer https
Mark the required options as shown in the image below.

Publisher Description:Are you trapped behind a firewall or a filtering web proxy and cannot access some or many web pages or use an application you would like to use or play a game you would like to play? Is your Internet connection being censored and you would like to stick censorship where the sun doesn't shine? Would you prefer to stay anonymous, that your IP address is not logged with every access to someone's web page? Then look no further, you've found the solution!

The Your Freedom services makes accessible what is unaccessible to you, and it hides your network address from those who don't need to know. Just download our client application and install or just run it on your PC; it turns your own PC into an uncensored, anonymous web proxy and an uncensored, anonymous SOCKS proxy that your applications can use, and if that's not enough it can even get you connected to the Internet just as if you were using an unrestricted DSL or cable connection -- just like the firewall suddenly went boom! You can even make your PC accessible from the Internet if you like. Nearly all applications work with Your Freedom, and so far no-one has managed to block our service completely and permanently without blocking your Internet access entirely.

Every day, more than 30,000 people in over 160 countries use our service, some because their government would rather not have them exercise their human rights, some because their school or university feels they are not mature enough to decide for themselves whether playing the odd game interferes with their studies or not, others because they don't want traceable IP addresses in every logfile. There are probably as many good reasons to use Your Freedom as there are restrictive firewalls in the world!

Your first step to an unrestricted Internet access is to register on this web page-- all you need to provide is a contactable email address and a username and a password, nothing else is required. Then download the client application (available for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and everything else that can run Java apps) and run it -- the wizard will guide you through configuring it properly. Then configure your applications to use your own PC as web or SOCKS proxy or use our transparent OpenVPN mode.

Advance Tor is built based on the original Vidalia bundle. As the name suggests, it's actually an improvement on Tor with certain important features which are not found the Tor + Vidalia bundle for Windows.
Tor, also known as the onion router is an anonymity software with an open network that users from all over the world can access to improve their anonymity online.

Advanced Tor has the certain edges over Tor:

-it offers to restrict connections from certain IP addresses or IP ranges
-ability to force TOR on specific processes in Windows.
-it has a more flexible configuration with more options
-it's possible to force exit nodes, configure node families, define specific connection details like bandwith rates and the maximum number of connections
Publishers Description:Advanced TOR is a client for OR network and is intended to be an improved alternative for Tor+Vidalia+Privoxy bundle for Windows users. It is able to “force” a program and its plugins to use the Tor proxy regardless of its configured proxy settings.

Working CGI Proxy List (Nov. 2010)

It's been quite a while I last posted CGI proxies but studying my analytics, I found out a huge number of people got here from google searching for CGI proxies. Definitely that means these proxies are widely used for bypassing firewall and web filters in school, work and other local area network with heavy restrictions. So, I decided to run a google search and came up with these few proxies you can use to unblock your blocked sites. They were all tested one after the other and found working as at the time of posting.

HTTP CGI PROXIES

http://pages.sssnet.com/skidz/cgi-bin/nph-proxy.cgi (United States)

http://anonymouse.ru/cgi-bin/nph-proxy.cgi (Russian Federation)

http://web-proxy.org.ua/cgi-bin/nph-proxy.cgi (Ukraine)

http://bobwinz.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi (United States)

http://proxy.jackspartyhouse.com/cgi-bin/nph-proxy.cgi (United States)

http://www.vicariousliving.com/cgi-bin/nph-proxy.cgi (United States)

http://lodgeus.com/cgi-bin/nph-SCAREWAR.cgi (United States)

http://mfp.hostwindsor.com/q/nph-index.cgi

http://87.98.243.193/cgiproxy/nph-proxy.pl (France)

http://uvirtual.dpicuto.edu.bo/cgi-bin/nph-proxy.cgi (bolivia)

http://old.sibicom-irk.ru/my/nph-my.pl (Belize)

http://66.116.196.251/cgi-bin/cgiproxy/nph-proxy.pl (unnited States)

The proxies above might not access secure sites like yahoomail and gmail. The CGI proxies below have SSL certificates and can be used to make secure connections. They are even harder to block since your connection is secure and your network operator might not even see you connecting to the proxy site.

HTTPS CGI PROXIES

https://ykpatra.dyndns.org/cgi-bin/nph-proxy.cgi (Greece)

https://www.samtechs.de/cgi-bin/nph-proxy.cgi (Germany)

You might as well check the last ones I posted. A large number of them still work till date.

I recently posted a tutorial on how you can easily create your very own CGI proxy too. You might wanna check it out.

NotMyIP - Free Tool To Hide Your IP

There's always a reason to keep your real IP address hidden. It's funny some people think you do not have to hide your identity online if you do not have a skeleton in your closet. There are several reasons and it might be to protect privacy, for bypassing censorship or senseless restrictions, to surf anonymously, to bypass Rapidshare download limit, to access sites blocked from your country of residence, etc.

Quite a lot of people use proxy servers in order to change their IP. So every time you use a proxy server, your real IP address is hidden and the sites you're visiting only see the IP address your proxy server gives.
NotMyIp is a free software that makes it easy to mask your real address and stay anonymous online. It's actually a freeware version of the premium anonymity software - Anonymity Gateway. But since this site basically deals with free anonymity softwares, we are gonna limit ourselves to NoyMyIP.

NotMyIp automatically configures all compatible browsers like Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Opera to use high quality US proxies. It doesn't require any manual configuration as if finds the proxies and automatically configures your browsers.

PUBLISHER'S NOTE: How many times did you say: “Oh, I wish this was not my IP”or “I want to hide my IP address” or “I want to mask my IP address” so you can bypass certain Internet restrictions and view content that is blocked for users in your area.

If you answered these questions at least “Some times” or “Many times” than we have the solution for you. Not My IP is an online privacy protection software that hides your real online identity from cyber thieves. Your online identity is given by your IP address, which provides plenty information about you. By providing you different proxies from all over the world, Not my IP will allow you to access websites that were blocked for you until now, to vote and comment on forums you were banned before, and further more to prevent other people (organizations) to follow you online.

If you answered these questions “Never” we would recommend you to think twice. Every Internet user needs this kind of online privacy protection solutions. Every Internet user should be aware of the online dangers they face online. Whether we like it or not, the thieves are around the corner, waiting to collect your personal data, information which you might want to keep it confidential, as it should be. Mask your real IP address and you will not have to worry for these anymore

India Web Proxy v1.0 - All About it

India Web Proxy is a light weight, java based proxy tunnelling software that relies on an external php proxy script to function. Before proceeding, I have to commend Objac, a friend and member in our mobile site who actually made this software known to me and most, if not all Nigerians

It's an open source java program that effectively bypasses firewall and internet censorship. It relies on a php proxy script for functionality and has a simple and flexible configuration.

Before using it though, you must have uploaded the required php script or have one that is still functioning...there's a lot on google too if you can run a filtered search.

Download India Web Proxy 1.0

download now

Creating Your India Web Proxy Server
The PHP proxy script you need to upload to your webhost is located in the zip file. Upload all three files in the PHP (Server module) folder to your domain web root. There are lots of free hosts to use and I'll list just a few of them

1. mobi.ps
2. x10hosting.com
2. 50webs.com
3. 100mb.com
4. 000a.biz
5. 20x.cc
6. freehostia.com
7. t35.com
8. byethost.com

I have to emphasize though that it's against some webhosts' TOS to use their server for proxy related service and some do not allow conneting to other servers via their server.

I've used the first two free webhosts and they are quite okay.

Now, some hosts require you to have an already registered domain name somewhere else and you'll need to do change some DNS record before you can make that work.
For starters, make sure the host you're choosing also offers you a free sub-domain like http://your-name.domain.com
If the host you choose requires a domain name, Dot.tk offers you a free domain name at no cost with a customizable DNS record.

I believe now you have already registered wit a free host, right? Now, check the welcome email you got from your webhost including your account details.
You should see your ftp server, username and password.

If not, navigate around your cpanel, it should be hooked up somewhere.

Now you've got the details, you need a ftp client software to upload your script...some hosts offer you a web based ftp interface but most do not.

Ftp clients softwares to upload stuffs to your server include SmartFTP, Filezilla etc. But i'm not gonna take your through d trouble of downloadin anything, there's an easy way out.
The easy way out is using an online ftp client...a site actually from where you can access your site and install your script easily.

http://ftplive.com

If you can upload via the file manger in your cpanel, click on it, otherwise you'll have to use ftplive.com with your ftp details (we discused that earlier)

Simply upload your script php script to your domain root or locate the www folder

I recently included some fixed scripts in the zipped folder with which you can create your IndiaWebProxy personal server on your free or paid host.

Configuring India Web Proxy
1. Locate and open IndiaWebProxy.jar (with java runtime 1.5 or higher)
2. Click on settings
3. You only need to configure 4 or 5 parameters
i. PHP Web server ip (or host) - I used my isp homepage for this(www.mtnonline.com).
ii. PHP Web server port - 80 or 8080 is okay
iii. PHP file url - the proxy script you uploaded earlier
iv. Oganization ip and port - if you connect via proxy (010.199.212.002 port 8080 for my ISP).

Save your settings and click on start and you're just a step away...

Now go to your browser settings and key in localhost:6050 and localhost:6051 for http and https connections respectively.
